What the 2004 Tsunami Revealed About Mahabalipuram

On the morning of 26 December 2004, something extraordinary happened at Mahabalipuram.

As the tsunami approached India's east coast, the sea suddenly retreated.

For a few minutes, the Bay of Bengal exposed a stretch of seabed that had been hidden for centuries. Local residents, fishermen and visitors reported seeing rows of dressed stones, walls and other structures before the water rushed back.

The scene immediately revived one of India's oldest coastal legends: the Seven Pagodas.

But did the tsunami really uncover a lost city?

The answer is more interesting than the legend.


A Story Older Than the Tsunami

Long before archaeologists began studying Mahabalipuram, European sailors knew it by another name: The Seven Pagodas.

For centuries, European sailors called Mahabalipuram the 'Seven Pagodas'.

The name came from a local tradition that several magnificent temples once stood along the coast, while only one—the Shore Temple—remained visible above the sea.

In the eighteenth century, William Chambers recorded conversations with local residents who claimed that earlier generations had remembered seeing the tops of temples far offshore at sunrise.

It was a fascinating story.

But stories are not evidence.


The Underwater Structures Were Not Entirely New

One of the biggest misconceptions about the 2004 tsunami is that it "discovered" a lost city beneath the sea.

It didn't.

Before the tsunami, marine archaeologists from India's National Institute of Oceanography (NIO) had already been surveying the waters east of Mahabalipuram.

Their underwater investigations documented dressed stone blocks, portions of walls, steps leading towards a platform and the remains of what appeared to be a substantial building complex lying approximately 700–800 metres offshore in 6–8 metres of water.

These were not random rock formations.

Many showed clear signs of human workmanship and systematic arrangement.

Marine archaeologists had already documented submerged structures before the tsunami.

The tsunami did not create this discovery.

It changed who was looking.

For a brief moment, evidence that had largely remained within archaeological reports became visible to thousands of people standing on the beach.


What the Tsunami Revealed on Land

The retreating sea briefly exposed features normally hidden beneath the Bay of Bengal.

The waves did more than expose the seabed.

They also stripped away layers of sand along parts of the coast north of Mahabalipuram.

At Saluvankuppam, archaeologists noticed an inscription connected with the Rashtrakuta king Krishna III.

That single discovery led the Archaeological Survey of India to begin excavations between 2005 and 2007.

What they uncovered surprised everyone.

Beneath the sand lay the remains of a temple complex that had developed over several centuries.

Archaeologists found evidence that an earlier brick shrine had later been rebuilt in stone as a temple dedicated to Subrahmanya. The inscription, dating to the fourth regnal year of Krishna III (943 CE), recorded a land grant to the temple. Even older Pallava-period remains were found beneath the later construction.

One of the tsunami's greatest archaeological contributions was therefore not simply exposing ruins.

It directed archaeologists towards a site that might otherwise have remained buried.


Did It Prove the Seven Pagodas?

Not completely.

The underwater investigations confirm that human-made structures once existed beyond today's shoreline.

Archaeologists have documented walls, dressed blocks, steps and platforms beneath the sea.

What they have not demonstrated is the existence of exactly six additional temples standing beside the Shore Temple as described in later versions of the legend.

The archaeology and the legend are not identical.

But neither are they completely unrelated.

Both point towards the same conclusion:

Mahabalipuram once extended farther towards the sea than it does today.


A Coast That Never Stood Still

The Coromandel Coast has never been fixed.

Over centuries, storms, coastal erosion, changing shorelines and sea-level fluctuations have continually reshaped the landscape.

Researchers studying the submerged remains identify coastal erosion as a major reason why parts of the ancient settlement now lie underwater.

UNESCO describes Mahabalipuram not simply as a collection of temples, but as a Pallava port city containing rock-cut monuments, monolithic temples, structural temples and excavated remains.

That final phrase is easy to overlook.

It reminds us that not every part of ancient Mahabalipuram still stands above ground.



What the Tsunami Really Changed

The 2004 tsunami did not prove every detail of the Seven Pagodas legend.

The coastline changed. The archaeological evidence suggests the ancient landscape was larger than the one we see today.

It did something far more valuable.

It briefly revealed a coastline normally hidden beneath the sea.

It drew worldwide attention to earlier marine archaeological research.

And it led directly to excavations that uncovered an important chapter of Mahabalipuram's history.

Legends preserve memories.

Archaeology tests them.

At Mahabalipuram, they do not tell exactly the same story.

But together they remind us that the coastline we see today is only one moment in a much longer history.

Some of ancient Mahabalipuram still stands before us.

Some of it still lies beneath the sea.
